The good thing about this festival is that you get to listen to amazing music and then turn around and look at an incredible view - the NYC skyline and the Statue of Liberty all lit up. You really can't beat that while a live version of "In Rainbows" is the soundtrack to you visual. Too bad I forgot my camera...I hope some company or at least Radiohead is fillming this.
I do realize now, enduring this long day that the US has too many festivals - especially multi-day ones.

"Everyone Has A Fucking Beard Here" - The Rainn Wilson Interview

George, WA -- I found Rainn Wilson to be a Gooseninja.com kind of guy. Not only does he have ties to Eastern Washington, but he's into Ninjas (I'll get to that) and seemingly everywhere at once. Like the small biplane circling the Gorge hour after hour, signage for his latest film The Rocker streaming behind, Mr. Wilson's brilliant, over-the-top acting presence has become omnipresent. As Rainn and I hung out on the side of the Sasquatch Music Festival's Mainstage in, we couldn't help but notice the small plane circling around and around. "I wish they would shoot that plane down…(He fires me a no-shit, but playfully exasperated look) It's too much, don't you think?" He said it, almost adopting the classic self-depreciating spirit of any great indi-rocker, and saving me one complaint. I agree these festivals have become over-saturated with marketing departments and promotional street teams, though instead of asking Mr. Wilson his take on the Fleet Foxes (who were performing as we chatted) I had to inquire about his next (ninja) picture, Bonzai Shadowhands.

"Imagine…Just Imagine the most fucked-up version of Karate Kid. That's Bonzai Shadowhands." Sold. The Fox Searchlight film will be directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You for Smoking). Gooseninja.com will keep you update as to the progress of this dark comedy about a depressed former master ninja.

Gazing upon the miles of God's golden country, we discussed The Office star's thoughts on Eastern Washington. "If Yakima is the armpit of Washington State, then Wapato is like the infested mole encrusted within that armpit." One should point out Rainn's wife (Author Holiday Reinhorn) hails from Wapato. The two met at the University of Washington's Hutchinson Hall in '85 and still frequent their vacation cottage in Sisters, OR. Surrounded by the malnourished and dehydrated, I found it refreshing to hear they still kick around our native Eastern Washington.

"Everyone has a fucking beard here." And he was right. These apathetic neo-hippies have no hygiene, no manners. Shave? Fuck, how about a shower! After a night of spreading herpes from tent to tent, these hardcore red-state rockers reak of BO and bud. Many of them are sporting red and white bandanas adorning the former SNL host's film The Rocker. For the role, Mr. Wilson worked with drum coach Stewart Johnson in LA.

As for real rockers, The Flaming Lips were at the top of the list for Rainn. He also professed a love for the Cold War Kids, whose show Mr. Wilson caught later on the sidestage. You could see he was completely into their set and engaged with their music. I think Rainn Wilson loves music, community, and people in general. Rolling Stone tapped him to blog for them (read it here) and interview Rogue Wave.

As the goose himself would say, your festival day has not begin until you hear Sublime in the parking lot. My new friend and I reminisced about replaying sublime so much 10 years ago, its hard to stomach these days.

The Maldives: Let it Rain!

The Maldives were able to squeeze in two songs before their set became waterlogged. No worries though, the show went on swingingly. There are like 14 guys on stage and they are each very talented craftsmen, working away through their set seemlessly. One member of the band, a second percussionist, looks about 15 and certainly stands out next to 6 guys who could each be a tractor salesmen. I was sold and we will have pics up soon!

A comedy tent has been added to this year's lineup, and no one is more excited than I.

As for our friend Tim Meadows, what a great sport. He stood next with us in the back and laughed at the majority of really bad jokes told by the openers. You can see in his eyes the time and dedication to the craft. He is here because he truly enjoys working with these young, promising comedians.

Had to jam out early... Here's a run down...the First comedian- Matt Besser had a great line when he opened with, " I don't know the difference between Tegan and Sara.". Matt Walsh, who followed, reminded me of former WWE star Mankind. Who the duck is this guy? But he made us laugh a few times. Bitter better bitter butter routine. People looking around like.... Is this really going on? Then, a guy goes on, Aaron Nevil. This one goes out to. I love you. I don't know where they were going with this sketch, maybe its better I never do. This was a poor review, more in depth to come in the next days. Best!

Fleet Foxes opened the fest to about 3,000 early entrants and gorgeous weather. There is a light breeze dusting the summer sun's heat right off all these fantastic festival goers. Say 75-80 with the wind chill. The lines have not been bad. Shower: 30 min. Front gate: 60 min.

Three Imaginary Girls, Seattle's sparkly indie-pop press, has reported the rumor that Seattle Rock club, Neumos, could be facing changes soon. Their sources cite a possible occupancy cut from 800 to 250 people. Is the city eyeing that land? First the Sonics, now Neumos?

We attended the recent The Kills and Clinic performances at Neumos, where both shows were sold out and Gooseninja officials had difficulty in securing tickets, very uncool . You could have shot a cannon through the place before the opener got started. It did feel as though more people could have been accommodated and the atmosphere was comfortable.

Kate Nash Live Update

Gearing up for the major European music festivals this summer, that sweet little Brit Kate Nash took the west coast by storm the past few weeks. We just can't get enough of her, so here's a little update on what she has been up to if you missed anything....

Last Night, Miss Nash closed the NME Awards USA Tour in LA at the Henry Fonda Theatre. She has been playing with The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players and last night invited

14-year-old Rachel Trachtenburg on stage to drum with the band. Later in the evening, bouncers tried to remove Miss Trachtenburg from the side of the stage at which point Miss Nash stopped in the middle of her hit song, Foundations, and said, "I know it's not professional, but she's in the band, she's not leaving." You go girl! See it below (Foundations at Henry Fonda Theatre)!

Kate played before a rowdy Friday night crowd at Seattle's historic Showbox Theatre (Market, 5/9/08). The crowd was so excited to have Miss Nash in town that they had to be routinely shushed. She was in great spirits and played two encores! Read what the Seattle PI said about the show.

The Kate Nash Coachella set was fiery to say the least. Our sources tell us she had a big blowout with her boyfriend backstage after the show, which could have explained her intense stage demeanor. Regardless, the temperature was hot both figuratively and literally, and this was one show not to miss. One of the things we love most about Kate's performance is the heavy inclusion of percussion. At times, all the members of her band will be banging on something. And the beat runs deeper than just the drums, as Miss Nash uses her piano to pound her soul into each piano tune. We are huge fans of former Maccabees drummer Elliot Andrews. That guy can really pound! He adds a strong backbone to the music and instantly gives Miss Nash credibility in the world of rock. This does not imply she needs the credibility, but should be noted when your friends compare your love for Kate to just another chick-pop crush.

Tegan writes that she was almost accosted by shirtless men in the VIP area and that she and Sara may form a band with the gals from The Breeders. Even if you know nothing about the music industry, you probably know this: People don't buy albums anymore. Everyone is aware of this, mostly because this phenomenon is reported on constantly. The soundtrack to High School Musical was considered a commercial success by selling 2.9 million units in all of 2007; seven years before, Britney Spears was able to sell 1.3 million copies of Oops! . . . I Did It Again in a single week. That disparity should be shocking, but it isn't -- by now, anyone who (even casually) follows the music industry is inundated with similarly grim statistics all the time. Interestingly, these stories tend to make music fans happy. People hate corporate record labels and love reading about how the industry is failing. As such, the media coverage of plummeting music sales almost always focuses on how labels are losing money. But this coverage usually ignores an economic element that is less tangible but more interesting: What is happening to all the money not being spent on music?

In 1999, the total revenue from all music sales (albums and singles) was $14.2 billion. By 2006, it was barely more than $10 billion, including downloads. While considering that staggering difference, assume the following suppositions are true:

* The music-buying population in 1999 wasn't that different from the music-buying population in 2006. Some people stopped buying music and some younger people started, but the overall demographic base is mostly identical in size and scope.
* The quality of the music produced in those respective years was not significantly different. In other words, no one is going to argue that sales only went down because the music got worse; the public's interest in sound is static.
* The price of music in stores stayed roughly the same. Gander On! for the rest.

This being the case, it would seem there are two elementary reasons why the decline in revenue happened: a) illegal file-sharing and b) heightened consumer selectivity. File-sharing has been written about extensively, so there is no need to readdress it here. The term "heightened consumer selectivity" is really just a manifestation of iTunes -- if someone is obsessed with the song "1 2 3 4" but has no interest in the Feist catalog, he can acquire the single for ninety-nine cents instead of blowing sixteen dollars on a full album he'd never play twice. But here's where the math gets less clear and more meaningful: These trends don't involve everyone. Your grandma is not using LimeWire. The 2.6 million people who love the Eagles are still going to Wal-Mart to buy the physical CD. In practice, it's only a select class of computer-savvy consumers who are making this dramatic revenue shift happen -- almost exclusively music fans under the age of forty who a) used to buy a few albums every other Tuesday but b) now buy virtually none over the course of an entire year. This specific underclass was the collective beneficiary of the aforementioned $4.2 billion difference from 2006; that number represents money they would have spent on music in 1999, but were able to save. So I wonder: Where did all that money go?

When the Associated Press did its (now annual) story about How the Music Industry Is Failing this past January, it tried to answer my question with one sentence: "The recording industry has experienced declines in CD album sales for years, in part because of the rise of online file-sharing, but also because consumers have spent more of their leisure dollars on other entertainment, like DVDs and video games." This is a rational explanation supported by the precipitous commercial rise in both idioms. (Video-game revenue has more than doubled since 2000, and DVD sales grew from $2.5 billion in 2000 to $23.4 billion last year.) The only problem is while CDs, DVDs, and video games are physically similar, and they're sold in the same outlet, the experiences they offer aren't logically connected. I don't see why not having to pay for a Band of Horses album would make a person any more likely to buy a copy of Knocked Up, as opposed to buying four gallons of gas or a pair of sunglasses or a turtle. I don't think young people swap out items in their "leisure" budget that explicitly. What seems more likely is that this extra $4.2 billion -- unequally distributed among all the music fans who didn't pay for music in 2006 -- entered the overall economy in lots of disparate ways. And while we'll never know exactly where all those bones disappeared, my specific theory is this: A lot of the money not spent on music in the twenty-first century is being used to pay off credit-card debt that was incurred during the nineties. In other words, not paying for In Rainbows today is helping people eliminate the balance they still owe for buying Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness when they were broke in 1995.

During the early eighties, it was difficult for college kids to get credit cards; at the time, parents still needed to be cosigners. But when that policy changed in the early nineties, it instantly became effortless for any slack-jawed student to get a credit card. Subsequently, the percentage of young adults (ages eighteen to thirty-four) with credit-card debt increased 5.6 percent from 1989 through 1998. But after 1998, it started to decrease; by 2004, it was lower than it was in 1989. Now, there are myriad reasons why this happened, but here is one potential factor: Napster -- and the entire file-sharing era -- launched in 1998. It seems entirely plausible that the money college students saved by stealing MP3's played a critical role in paying down whatever they owed on Visa cards they never should have applied for in the first place. I suspect that if Shawn Fanning had pioneered a safe, socially acceptable way to electronically shoplift from Target in 1997, people would have jumped on that bandwagon instead.

Whenever writers try to explain the collapse of the music industry, they inevitably blame the labels themselves; they point out how wasteful and inefficient the corporate structure was at places like Elektra and Chrysalis, and how unfair it is to charge kids so many dollars for a disc that costs pennies to make, and that modern consumers have come to the realization that "music longs to be free." This may all be true, but I'm not sure it's a viable explanation for things like huge layoffs at Def Jam. Lots of industries succeed despite being poorly modeled. What happened is this: Young people needed more money to pay for their rising levels of self-imposed debt, so they unconsciously gravitated toward the first technology that provided a cost-saving alternative. Because four-minute digital-song files are relatively small (and thus easily compressed), ripping tracks for free became the easiest way to eliminate an extraneous cost. It wasn't political or countercultural, and it had almost nothing to do with music itself. It was fiscally practical. It was the first, best solution.

People didn't stop buying albums because they were philosophically opposed to how the rock business operated, and they didn't stop buying albums because the Internet is changing the relationship between capitalism and art. People stopped buying albums because they wanted the fucking money. It's complicated, but it's not.

Lollapalooza’s Austin, Texas-based promoters C3 Presents are not scheduled to make their official announcement of the acts performing at this year’s weekend-long music festival in Grant Park until Monday, but the Sun-Times has confirmed through industry sources all of the major artists.

Art-rock giants Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, the reunited Rage Against the Machine, Jack White’s side project the Raconteurs and hometown heroes Wilco and Kanye West will headline the main stages on Aug. 1-3.

The Raconteurs, Wilco and West will each be making their second appearance at the reinvented destination festival. Other repeaters among the more than 100 acts on this year’s bill are Gnarls Barkley, the Black Keys, Broken Social Scene, G. Love & Special Sauce, Blues Traveler and Mates of State.

Quite a few of the other acts — including many of the most promising — have earlier performed at Chicago’s two independently produced music festivals, Pitchfork and Intonation. These include Bloc Party, Cat Power, Stephen Malkmus, Girl Talk, Kid Sister, Office, the Cool Kids, Battles, the Go! Team, Jamie Lidell and Grizzly Bear.

Ed Banger All Star Mixtape

This has been floating around the internets for about a week now and we finally found somewhere streaming it. Lifelounge has the entire two hour mix streaming. The mixtape was recorded for Germany's Sputnik Radio and features songs by all the Ed Banger team members and other classics. The entire thing is mixed by Busy P, Justice and DJ Mehdi. It's got that classic Ed Banger sound and we love it.

We get a new music video about once a month from Kanye and usually they're a little though provoking or bring us something new visually that we hadn't seen. The Video for "Homecoming" however is a mix between Common's "The Corner" video and an Ipod commercial. Lot's of Chicago landmarks and tall corner shots mixed with Chris Martin's silhouette dancing, singing and playing piano. We love the song but we've seen this type of video before. Also whats with the shot at the end where Kanye has a gangster posse following him through the streets of Chicago.
