Vegoose Day 1
It was a long day in the Las Vegas desert yesterday but thee performances were well worth it. Eugene Hutz and Gogol Bordello got us started off with a rousing set filled with gypsy punk theatrics including Eugene bathing himself in wine and to our count breaking at least three mic stands. Next for was Atmosphere who came out looking like he was going to sing us some country songs rather than some great hip-hip tunes. The fans were shoe gazing early as Slug played some new tunes but after playing "God Loves Ugly" they quickly began to pump their fists and sing along.
Public Enemy hit the stage late but showed they still have the energy to rock a crowd half their age that probably doesn't even own a Public Enemy album. Flavor Flav was in full effect leading the crowd in chants of Fuck George Bush, Fuck Disk Cheney, and Fuck Condoleeza, and throwing in a Fuck Tony Blair for good measure.
We got to Cypress Hill just in time to hear "Insane In The Membrane" and hear them go through nearly a dozen more songs about reefer and the police. The stage show really hasn't changed for Cypress in a while but they still know how to rock a crowd.
After checking the Red Sox score we headed over to M.I.A. who we have been wanting to see all year but visa problems for her and work for us always got in the way. The set was full of gunshots and M.I.A. moved rhythmically to their sound. Later in the set she brought a good third of the crowd onstage to dance with her and caused some alarm for security. We made sure to lead the crowd around us in the unique dance moves that go along with M.I.A.'s music. Our favorite being stomp the cockroach.
The rest of the evening is kind of a blur. We listened to a little of Iggy while we waited to take a trip through Axe's sexy haunted house and then caught Thievery Corporation before making our way to get a good spot for Daft Punk. We made some international friends in the crowd who were giving everyone drinks from their bag of wine and who were also kind enough to glitter us up for Daft Punk. The French duo like always were amazing and put on a light show to be remembered. We were trying to imagine what it was like to see the show from the planes landing overhead. We were a sweaty mess and the end of the day but the smile produced by Daft Punk is still on ur face as we type this morning. Day 2 starts with Ghostland Observatory and ends with Rage Against the Machine. We'll be updating all day so stay tuned.

Daft Punk Rejects Will.i.am Sample. Unfortunatly It May be To Late!

A word of advice to the rap community. Sampling Daft Punk will not sell records. Recently Black Eyed Peas member and man purse toting Will.i.am requested to sample Daft's "Around The World" for his "I Got It From My Mama" remix. The French duo thankfully rejected his request but not before Willy shot a video for the track. The songs bad, the videos bad, bad! bad! bad! That's all we can say. Will if your going to sample "Around The World" maybe you could incorporate it into the lyrics or get someone to direct a unique video for it. There is no originality here, your just relying on a sample to get radio play and sell records. Stick to spelling tasty wrong and break dancing, and lose the purse!. Gander on for the video travesty that is "I Got It From My Mama" the remix.

Daft Punk Invaded Seattle

Sunday's performance at the new WaMu Theater was perhaps the best concert Seattle has seen in some time. Daft Punk, the Parisian electro-duo, took the stage with such great anticipation, I was worried the show might not deliver. You see, like many in the crowd I have been a devout Daft Punk fan for well over a decade and this was their first Northwest show in some seven
years. There was no worry needed, as soon as the robot rockers took their place on the giant pyramid, the crowd lit up faster than John Daly on the back nine.
At the core of this amazing show was of course the music. They threw all the hits at the crowd ("Around the World," "One More Time," "Da Funk," "Aerodynamic") without making you feel they are simply trotting out their best-of album. Each hit sounds uniquely mixed and perfectly placed in the set.
The music definitely stands on its own, however the stage set-up alone was visual ecstacy. Like a Vegas night show from space, the stunning laser light show progressively built throughout the set. Using a combination of neon scaffolding, giant strobes, and one bad-ass pyramid super-screen, the jumpsuit-clad DJs flew me to the moon and back. And that was before they unveiled a Quest Field-sized monitor BEHIND all the other amazing screens and lighting trusses.
Any seat in the small theater would have been amazing, though I braved the pit and quickly made my way right to the front of the action. Getting there, I weaved my way through a combination of 20-something pouty indie rockers, nerd-rock dress-up dorks, 30-something pouty indie rockers, and too many scantily-clad eleventeen-year-olds to count (who are these girls' parents?). Drugs were present, though I didn't notice as many dilated pupils as I would have expected. While the event was held in the same building as USC 5/6 and numerous other large raves, that scene has obviously died out or found younger electronic acts to follow. The show was sold out and I imagine there were no more than 7000 people in attendance (just a guess).
Supporting was The Rapture, who have perfected the paradox of looking boring in a high-energy way. Everything about lead singer Luke Jenner is so uninteresting I couldn't stop watching him. How could someone so skinny, so normal captivate me? And why is he asking for "more light on the stage?" I don't know, but I enjoyed it.
Don't miss your next chance to see Daft Punk live. This was my third experience and definitely the best yet. While their set at Coachella was spectacular, the longer set-time allows them more freedom to play with all their on-stage gadgets. By the encore, even their jumpsuits were blazing with neon (think Tron on Ecstacy) and glowing with Daft Punk logos on the back. Thank you gentlemen, Seattle will be awaiting your next landing.

Vice Records Justice Week
Over at Vice mp3 blog they are having Justice week. Every day they bring us a remix of D.A.N.C.E. as well as a Justice remix. Today's Justice remix is Daft Punk's "Human After All." Today's version of D.A.N.C.E.(Nightmarish Remix) is by Blaze and yesterdays (Paste Back Remix) was done by DatA. We aren't really feeling the Blaze remix after about the first minute but The Daft track is a winner. The truth is Justice is our golden boy this year, he could remix Whitesnake and we'd love it. Just finished listening to Data's remix and all we can say is WOW! great stuff. Check back for daily updates and reviews of the future remixes. Gander on for the download links.
